Documentary We Love 🎥
“The Social Dilemma” Most of you have probably either watched this documentary or at least have heard of it. In fact, I bet it’s a big reason why you’ve downloaded an app like Present in the first place, whether you’re consciously aware of it or not. This documentary took the world by storm in 2020 by describing in detail how social media companies have made our phones intentionally addictive in ways that have widespread negative impacts across society. It’s fair to say it’s by far the most mainstream critique of how social media companies have engineered our attention. I vividly remember watching it and coming away thinking “Wow, this is f#$%’d up. How do we solve this problem?” I didn’t know it at the time, but The Social Dilemma had planted a seed that I would continue to think about for years. The documentary resonated with me so strongly that I decided to quit my job and start a company to solve the problems it highlighted. If you haven’t watched it, please check it out. It’s entertaining, but it’s also very informative. In order to break your phone addiction, I’m a big believer that you need to first understand why you’re addicted in the first place and the impact it has on your life. This way, you’re better equipped to fight back and more motivated to change your behavior. And motivation is half the battle.
Quote That Has Us Thinking 🧠
“When nothing seems to help, I go and look at a stonecutter hammering away at his rock, perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it. Yet at the hundred and first blow it will split in two, and I know it was not that last blow that did it, but all that had gone before.” - Jacob Riis Tldr: it’s a marathon, not a sprint. It can sometimes take a while to see results, so don’t get discouraged when it sometimes seems like you’re not making progress.
