Book We Love 📚

“Outlive: The Science and Art of Longevity” - Peter Attia, MD If you’re not sure who Peter Attia is, he’s a physician (and podcaster) who is well-known for his research into longevity. He’s been on podcasts like Tim Ferriss and The Huberman Lab. You might also know him from the recent special he did with Chris Hemsworth where Chris discovered he has a genetic predisposition to Alzheimer’s. Outlive is interesting for a number of reasons. It details how modern medicine has been incredibly effective at increasing lifespan from 50 to 80, but also why we’ve seemed to hit a wall. The message of the book is that a new medical mentality is needed to solve problems like cardio vascular disease, Alzheimer’s, and cancer. He then describes - in painstaking detail - how we can implement changes to our lifestyle given the latest research. But my favorite - and probably the most important chapter - is the last. “Work In Progress: The High Price of Ignoring Emotional Health”. This chapter discusses why emotional health is just as important as physical health, which I think is lost in the current “biohacking” culture. You can try to extend your life, but if you don’t enjoy living, what’s the point? If you get his book, read the last chapter FIRST. Now disclaimer - this book is LONG. In my opinion, the best way to read it is to start with the intro and last chapter. Then scan the chapters and pick which ones you want to read first. I treat each chapter as an individual deep-dive into a subject. Also pro tip: Peter reads the audio book which gives it some special character that I enjoy!

Quote That Has Us Thinking 🧠

“Family pathology rolls from generation to generation, like a fire in the woods, taking down everything in its path. Until one person, in one generation, has the courage to face the flames. That person brings peace to his ancestors and spares the children that follow.”

Terry Real I discovered this quote while reading Peter Attia’s book Outlive and thought it was super powerful.

Weekend Activity Brainstorm 💪

  1. Do that home improvement project you’ve been meaning to do 🔨

  2. Cook a delicious meal (I’ve been loving Cowboy Cooking’s recipes lately) 😋

  3. Go to a local farmer’s market 👨‍🌾

If you end up doing one of these challenges, send us pictures at contact@geptresentapp.com and you can be featured in a future newsletter!
